School of Hans von AACHEN (Cologne 1552 - Prague 1615) The Virgin Mary, baby Jesus and little Saint John with a basket of fruit. Oil on panel. Oak. Three vertical boards. H. 67 - L. 51.5 cm Wood and gilded stucco frame with oak leaf motif around the perimeter (Width: 13 cm). On the reverse of the frame, an English dealer's label for painting materials, frames, engravings and antiques (accidents). Condition: small restoration at the junction of the upper-right boards; nearby vertical trace of accident and restoration; small gap on Saint John's elbow. Small restoration at lower left. Old, dirty varnish. Note: An engraving of the composition, dedicated to the Duke of Bavaria, was made in 1591 by Jan Sadeler (1550 - 1600), when the two artists were probably together in Munich, at the court of Duke William V (The Philadelphia Museum). Another version of this painting, painted on copper (17.4 x 14 cm) after Hans von Aachen, is in the Munich Pinakothek (N° 3687).
