[MANUSCRIT]. COUTELE (Capitaine): Mémoire sur la guerre soutèraine, la poudre de mine et sur une nouvelle bouche à feu nommée pétard soutèrain. In 4, half brown chagrin binding, smooth spine decorated (modern binding). Manuscript of 47 pages by Mr. Coutèle, captain in the Imperial Corps of Engineers. In 1794, he was appointed captain commanding the Aérostiers, and took part in the Egyptian expedition with Conté; he was raised to the rank of brigade commander by Kléber. Following on from General Marescot's memoir, Captain Coutèle presents his experience in the art of transforming open-air combat into underground combat, for the attack or defense of places of war. He then describes the design and construction of his infernal machine, and the system he invented to make air breathable in the underground. This manuscript was printed by Canis in Nice and published in Savona in 1812, with 3 plates not included in the manuscript.
