Born in Moscow, he completed his artistic training at the city's School of Fine Arts. He moved to Paris in 1908 and attended the Académie Matisse. He soon exhibited his Rythmes colorés at the Salon des Indépendant. In 1920, he founded the Section d'Or group alongside Braque, Gleizes, Archipenko... He also designed opera sets and costumes, notably for Diaghilev and Stravinsky. From 1925 to 1932, he was a regular visitor to Collioure, following in the footsteps of Matisse and Derain. This was his first exposure to the Mediterranean way of life.
