MOREAU DE JONNES Alexandre (1778-1870) - Lot 270
MOREAU DE JONNES Alexandre (1778-1870) Portrait of a woman with a scarf. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. 32.5 x 24 cm With frame : 44 x 36,5 cm Note: Alexandre Moreau de Jonnès spent the first part of his life in the military. He was then put in charge of statistical work for the Minister of Commerce, and began a career as a senior civil servant. Throughout his life, he traveled extensively, notably to the Levant and the West Indies. In 1838, he was in Cuba and set up a lithography workshop with the help of Bordeaux painter Pierre Toussaint Frédéric MIALHE (1810-1881). This workshop produced a large number of lithographed Cuban landscapes. These three works, previously unseen on the art market, mark the discovery of Alexandre Moreau de Jonnès' artistic activity. Dated to the 1830s, these three oil paintings were certainly produced during his stays in the West Indies, as evidenced by the palm trees in the background of these romantic portraits.
