RAYSSE Martial (born 1936). Ultramarine Blue Monochrome, 1958. Oil on canvas. Signed, dated October 1958 and located at 1 rue d'Italie, Nice on the back on the stretcher. 93 x 28.5 cm Provenance: France Raysse-Cristini collection, then given to the mother of the current owners. Note: This work is characterized both by its thick paste - typical of Martial Raysse's artistic youth, as we saw with Soleil d'août sur le petit port (lot 87) - and by the depth of its color: pure monochromatism. The use of an ultramarine blue with intense pigments echoes the research carried out at the same period by the artist Yves Klein. It was in 1958, when this work was created, that the two artists met through Arman. The previous year, Yves Klein had begun to work with ultramarine blue, exhibiting eleven canvases covered in an intense blue in Milan. In 1960, his research led to the patenting of the IKB technique, which combines pigment and synthetic binder. This characteristic blue also forms the background of the Declaration of New Realism signed on October 27, 1960 by members of the movement, including Yves Klein and Martial Raysse. Finally, as proof of the friendship between the two artists, between 1962 Yves Klein undertook the casting of Martial Raysse's body to create a "relief portrait" covered in IKB on a gold background. For Yves Klein: "Blue has no dimension, it is out of dimension".
