RAYSSE Martial (1936) - Lot 86
RAYSSE Martial (1936) Double-sided painting. Oil on panel recto and verso. One side signed and dated 1958 lower right. One side signed in the composition at upper left with two stamps (partly illegible, perhaps: "Douanes françaises / Bureau de Nice-Cargo?). (frame strips partly missing, a small tear at the top). 99 x 79 cm Provenance: France Raysse-Cristini collection, then given to the mother of the current owners. Note: This double-sided painting offers us an immersive visual experience at the heart of the artist's early production. On one side, we find two flat rectangles of color, one blue and one yellow, whose intensity tends toward gold. On the reverse, we find the thick paste characteristic of the 1950s on an ultramarine blue undercoat, echoing our monochrome painting (lot 85). The originality of this side lies in the incisions made by the artist in the material of the work: Martial Raysse, twice, and Nice, like a signature deep inside the work, revealed by this intense blue. Two stamps, partly erased but appearing to have come from Nice customs, suggest that the work may have traveled, in Europe or even as far as the United States, where the artist lived between 1963 and 1968, making frequent trips back and forth with his wife, France.
