RAYSSE Martial (born 1936) - Lot 87
RAYSSE Martial (born 1936) August sun on the little port. Mixed media with oil and sand on jute canvas. Signed, titled and located in Beaulieu-sur-mer on the back. 66 x 84 cm (frame damaged) Provenance: France Raysse-Cristini collection, then given to the mother of the current owners. Note: Consisting of a thick paste, this painting is characteristic of Martial Raysse's youthful period, when he elaborated a painting from a mixture of sand and plaster. The work undoubtedly dates from 1955-57, when the artist set up a studio in the cellar of his family home in Beaulieu-sur-Mer to experiment with materials - materials he characterized as "haute pâte", and discovered in the work of Jean Dubuffet. In this studio, the artist experimented with matter with his bare hands, dispensing with the classic intermediary of the brush, and developing a new way of painting, as close to the work as possible. As its title suggests, this painting unfolds a Mediterranean impression bathed in light, where Raysse captures the essence of a suspended moment. The work testifies to the artist's anchorage in his surroundings in Nice, while at the same time claiming an aesthetic universality.
