Note: Originally from Draguignan, Alain Girelli trained in carpentry and cabinetmaking before discovering sculpture with Max ERNST (1891-1976), working in his studio in 1974. By 1977, his work was being exhibited throughout France, winning him a number of awards. His sculptures are characterized by the assembly of two favorite materials: cade wood (a solid, rot-proof Mediterranean shrub) and cut stone. As Bénézit points out, this combination abolishes the tensions between plant and mineral to achieve a balance of form.
