James Coignard was a French multidisciplinary artist - painter, sculptor and printmaker - who pushed back the technical and formal boundaries of his art. After figurative beginnings marked by the influence of the École de Paris, he quickly moved towards more abstract compositions sensitive to matter, notably through carborundum etching, which he explored from 1968 onwards. His work is characterized by a rich, vibrant palette and a constant interest in creative media, textures and gestures.
