HAMILTON Richard (1922-2011) - Lot 25
HAMILTON Richard (1922-2011)
Motel I
Waddington Graphics, London, 1979.

Reference. Hansjorg Mayer, N° 109
Note:
British artist Richard Hamilton can be considered the father of Pop Art, with his iconic 1956 work "Just what is it that makes today's home so different, so appealing?" (preserved at the Kunsthalle, Tübingen). Our lot is related to the series of interior scenes he produced in various forms (collage, etching, photogravure). Here, he takes a postcard and transposes it into a gray monochrome, accentuating the moody character of this motel room. There is a second version (Motel II) of this etching, in which the rectangle reflected on the curtain is blue, in a nod to Yves Klein's monochromes.
