RATOVA Henri (1881-1929) Malagasy scene: the water carrier. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1926 lower right. (small marks) 40 x 30 cm (frame: 45 x 35 cm) Henri Ratova was a Malagasy-born painter active in the early XXᵉ century, part of what is sometimes called the "Malagasy School". He produced vibrant works depicting everyday life in Madagascar, such as harvest scenes in Tananarive, manifesting a sensitivity to tropical light. His style - blending Impressionist and Modernist influences - is distinguished by a rich palette and careful composition, giving artistic voice to a setting rarely treated in the art of his time.
