RAYSSE Martial (born 1936) - Lot 102
RAYSSE Martial (born 1936) Composition à pâte épaisse, mid-1950s. Oil on canvas. Bearing provenance details on the stretcher: "given by France Raysse in 1995". (restorations) 60 x 25.5 cm (frame: 62 x 27 cm) Note: Consisting of a thick paste, this painting is characteristic of Martial Raysse's youthful period, when he elaborated a painting from a mixture of sand and plaster. The work undoubtedly dates from 1955-56, when the artist set up a studio in the cellar of his family home in Beaulieu-sur-Mer to experiment with materials - materials he characterized as "haute pâte", and discovered in the work of Jean Dubuffet. In this studio, the artist experimented with matter with his bare hands, dispensing with the classic intermediary of the brush, and developing a new way of painting, as close as possible to the work.
