CANTRE Jozef (Belgium, 1890-1957) Female body. Carved stone proof. Signed on the side. Wooden base (wear). (small stains). Height without base: 32.5 cm; height with base: 38 cm Jozef Cantré is a major artist of Flemish Expressionism. Trained at the Ghent Academy, he worked in wood, stone and bronze, and practiced woodcutting with a style combining geometric simplification and dynamic realism. His monumental works, such as public monuments and busts, illustrate this fusion of formal modernity and artisan sensibility. Cantré left a lasting imprint in Belgium and the Netherlands, both through his sculptures and his avant-garde illustrations.
