Marcantonio Raimondi is one of the great figures of Italian Renaissance engraving. Considered a master of the burin, he established himself as the principal engraver interpreting the style of Raphael, whose aesthetic he greatly contributed to spreading throughout Europe. His talent earned him a considerable reputation, but his career was also marked by setbacks, notably after the sack of Rome in 1527, which ruined him. He died a few years later, leaving behind a body of work that played a decisive role in the history of printmaking.
Agostino Veneziano was born in Venice, then settled in Rome, where he became one of Raimondi's main collaborators. A skilled and prolific engraver, he began by imitating prints by Dürer, then developed his own personal style, often working from drawings by Raphael or his circle. After 1527, he continued to produce, sometimes using existing matrices, which he signed with his monogram "A.V.". His work bears witness to a perfect mastery of the burin and a keen sense of composition.
The engraving La Carcasse, inspired by a drawing by Girolamo Genga, belongs to that repertoire of fantastic scenes so prized in the early XVIᵉ century. Its attribution remains debated: while Raimondi could be the author, some specialists believe that Agostino Veneziano took over the plate and signed it in a second state. The scene depicts a witch riding a carcass, surrounded by strange, muscular beings, in an atmosphere evocative of the Sabbath and the beliefs associated with witchcraft. The whole is part of a tradition nourished by the influence of Dürer, but amplified here in a spectacular, monumental vision.
