Initially trained by his father in Lyon, Pierre Drevet moved to Paris during the reign of Louis XIV. He then became the king's engraver, specializing in portraits after official painters, in particular Hyacinthe Rigaud and Nicolas de Largillierre. His engraving work is marked by exceptional precision, virtuoso rendering of fabrics and a rare ability to convey the psychological presence of his models. Through the quality and breadth of his output, Pierre Drevet established himself as one of the undisputed masters of French portrait engraving in the early XVIIIᵉ century.
Louis-Hector, Duc de Villars (1653-1734), was one of the most brilliant marshals of France under Louis XIV. Entering the military career at a very young age, he distinguished himself in numerous campaigns, notably during the War of Spanish Succession, where his decisive victory at Denain (1712) turned the tide in France's favor. A skilful diplomat as well as strategist, he also played an important political role in the final years of the reign. Honored with the baton of marshal and the title of duke, Villars remains one of the great architects of French military prestige in the early XVIIIᵉ century.
