FILLOEUL Pierre (1696-1754), after WATTEAU Jean-Antoine (168 - Lot 5
FILLOEUL Pierre (1696-1754), after WATTEAU Jean-Antoine (1684-1721) Head characters n°9 and n°18. Two engraved plates, from the work "Livre de différents caractères de têtes. Inventez par M. Watteaux, et gravez d'après ses desseins par FILLOEUL" published in the 18th century. Each laminated on sheet. Engraving: approx. 17 x 12 cm (frame: 32 x 16 cm) Pierre Filloeul trained in Paris with Jacques-Philippe Lebas. He specialized in reproducing works by fêtes galantes artists such as Jean-Baptiste Pater and Jean-Antoine Watteau. His virtuosity is expressed in his series of etchings and burins, such as "Têtes", in which he combines finesse of line with a sense of character. Jean-Antoine Watteau is the painter of fête galante par excellence, often considered one of the fathers of the rocaille style. He is famous for having invented this genre: that of lyrical compositions in which elegant characters evolve in poetic landscapes. In addition to his paintings, he produced numerous portrait drawings (mainly in pencil or three-pencil), which served as models for engravers such as Filloeul.
