Piranesi, Italian architect and engraver, is renowned for his engraved views, or vedute, which capture the grandeur and picturesqueness of ancient Rome. In these works, he combines archaeological rigor with sublime inventiveness, transforming every monument and ruin into a dramatic scene. This plate appears as number 43 in volume 2 of Vedute di Roma. His style exerted a great influence on the neoclassical aesthetics and European artists of his time.
