16th CENTURY SPANISH SCHOOL, after RAPHAEL Venus stung by a rose Panel. (old restorations) 42.8 x 32.5 cm Note: Another version of this composition, formerly attributed to Correggio, is in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston (inventory P26w3; canvas, 97 x 72 cm). Both derive from the engraving by Marco Dente da Ravenna, circa 1516, taken from the decoration by Raphael's workshop of the Stufetta. Raphael's workshop for Cardinal Bibbiena's Stufetta. The subject is inspired by The Lamentation of Adonis by the Greek poet Bion (active circa 100 BC): Venus, distraught at the death of her lover Adonis, wanders barefoot through the woods and is wounded by brambles.
