French school circa 1820, entourage of Baron Gérard - Lot 41
French school circa 1820, entourage of Baron Gérard Portrait of a lady in a white satin dress. Canvas. Signed lower left 'f Gerard 1831', and inscribed 'mon ami'. (lifts, chancis, craquelures, missing parts and humidity). 186 x 126.5 cm (frame: 204 x 145 cm) Provenance: Hôtel de la Reine, Place Stanislas, Nancy. Note: Built between 1751 and 1755 as part of the major project for the Place Stanislas, the Alliot Pavilion was conceived as a ceremonial building for Stanislas Leszczynski's intendancy. It quickly became an administrative and symbolic center, housing the intendance offices and then, at the end of the XVIIIᵉ century, the services of the departmental administration. During the Revolution and the early years of the XIXᵉ century, it retained its institutional vocation and housed the prefecture, affirming its strategic role in the heart of Nancy. The apartments and salons of the pavilion, richly decorated, then preserve collections of furniture, paintings and objets d'art, testifying to the care given to ornamentation and the representation of power. In 1814, Emperor Alexander I of Russia stayed in the building, underlining the ceremonial importance of the residence. From the 1820s, after the departure of the public administration, the building gradually passed into private hands: it became the property of the de Crevoisier de Vomécourt family, and in the years 1820-1830, a music school was established within the walls of the pavilion, continuing a cultural tradition that had already been present in the building. According to municipal archives, this music school was still in operation in the early 1830s, underlining the building's shift towards civil and artistic uses.
