Renowned for his religious, mythological and allegorical scenes, Gérard Seghers was influenced in his youth by Italian Caravaggism, particularly Bartolomeo Manfredi, and adopted a dramatic chiaroscuro style, while later developing a brighter palette under the influence of Rubens. After a stay in Italy and Spain, he returned to Antwerp around 1620 and produced numerous monumental works for churches and prestigious clients. Seghers enjoyed great success during his lifetime, not only as a painter, but also as an art collector and dealer, and exerted a lasting influence on Flemish painting of his time.
