Henry Schouten trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he developed a sensitive, balanced realism inspired in particular by the animal painter Alfred Verwee. His works, often populated by cattle, poultry or horses, finely reflect country life and nature. He exhibited from the end of the XIXᵉ century in Belgian and French salons, and remains appreciated by enthusiasts for the warmth and authenticity of his compositions.
