CARPEAUX Jean-Baptiste (1827-1875), after - Lot 81
CARPEAUX Jean-Baptiste (1827-1875), after Why be born a slave? Bust in patinated plaster, mounted on a painted base with a gilded bronze caduceus motif. Height: 48.5 cm "Pourquoi naître esclave" perfectly illustrates Carpeaux's talent for combining realism and dramatic force: the sculpture expresses intense despair and revolt against injustice, embodying the struggle for human freedom. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and winner of the Prix de Rome, Carpeaux excelled at translating movement and emotion into his figures, whether busts, statues or bas-reliefs. This work bears witness to his unique ability to blend technical virtuosity with moral depth.
