CAIN Auguste Nicolas (1821-1894) - Lot 87
CAIN Auguste Nicolas (1821-1894) The Awakening. Bronze proof with brown patina. Signed on the terrace, titled and dated 1914 on the circular base, foundry signature Susse frères Paris on the terrace. Height: 48 cm Note: Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris and a pupil of François Rude and François Jouffroy, Auguste Nicolas Cain specialized in animal sculpture. He married Pierre Jules Mêne's daughter, becoming his son-in-law, and took over his father-in-law's foundry, enabling him to produce his bronzes in both series and one-off pieces. Winner of the Salon and several official medals, he also worked on major public commissions, notably for fountains and monuments in Paris. Cain thus occupies a major place in the French academic tradition of naturalistic sculpture, combining realism, expressiveness and technical expertise.
