Mathieu Criaerd, although best known for his work in the Louis XV style, first worked in the Regency period, notably creating straight or "tomb" commodes veneered in dark woods such as amaranth or rosewood. In this phase, he used classical bronzes, less expressive than his later Rococo models, and was already implementing sober forms, prefiguring his evolution towards more ornate pieces. His Regency work testifies to his ability to combine solid construction and sober elegance: here he laid the foundations of his refined production, before turning to bolder decorations (Martin varnish, floral marquetry...).
