In 1888, Edouard Estaunié was preparing his first novel, Un Simple, originally called Stéphane, which happened to have the same subject as Pierre et Jean. Maupassant, adds Clément-Janin (who published the present letter in Le Monde Nouveau of July 15, 1924), would have consented to this letter serving as a preface to Un Simple. Estaunié simply dedicated his novel to him, which was published three years later. Maupassant, Correspondance, tome III, pp. 25-26, edition by Jacques Suffel, Le Cercle du bibliophile, Évreux, 1973. Letter 494.
