HAMILTON Richard (1922-2011) - Lot 17
HAMILTON Richard (1922-2011)
Hugh Gaitskell as a Famous Monster of Filmland.
Photolithograph signed by the artist and numbered 79/100.
Framed. 37.5 x 36.5 cm
Note:
British artist Richard Hamilton can be considered the father of Pop Art with his iconic 1956 work "Just what is it that makes today's home so different, so appealing?" (held at Kunsthalle, Tübingen).
Our lot is taken from the "Collected Words: de luxe portfolio" published in 1982 by Waddington Graphics, London, a copy of which is held by MOMA (inventory no. 19.2016.1). Here, he takes up the satirical portrait of politician Hugh Gaitskell (1906-1963) that he painted in 1964 (Arts Council Collection, London - no. AC 724). In this portrait, he superimposed a newspaper photograph of the politician onto a cover of the horror magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland, featuring actor Claude Rains in the film The Phantom of the Opera. The artist regarded Gaitskell as a political monster; he was leader of the British Labour Party from 1955 until his death in 1963.
