Note: A major figure in the ninth art, Joseph Gillain, known as Jijé, is often considered the true founder of the Marcinelle School, from which came Franquin, Morris and many other great names in European comics. Less well known, however, is his work as a painter. The landscapes he painted during his stays in Spain illustrate a body of work that is now being rediscovered by comic book enthusiasts and 20th-century art collectors alike.
