POLENG Ida Bagus Made (1915-1999) - Lot 83
POLENG Ida Bagus Made (1915-1999) Balinese mythological scene at the Barong. Tempera on canvas. (small stains, slight wear) 95 x 150 cm Provenance: Paulo Gallery, Jakarta. A certificate dated February 10, 1992 by Paul Rouganiou will be given to the buyer. Note: A major figure of the Ubud School, Ida Bagus Made Poleng belongs to the prestigious Pitamaha generation, a movement founded in 1936 to preserve and promote modern Balinese painting. Trained by his father Ida Bagus Kembeng and later by Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet, he is now considered one of the most important Balinese artists of the 20th century, represented in the collections of the Museum Puri Lukisan in Ubud, the Neka Museum and several European and American institutions. The theme of the Barong is central to his work. Protector of the human world in Hindu-Balinese tradition, the Barong symbolizes the beneficial forces engaged in an eternal struggle against Rangda, the figure of disorder and destruction. With its rich narrative, dense composition and exceptional mastery of tempera, this mythological scene fully illustrates the artist's ambition to transpose the great Balinese spiritual narratives into a modern pictorial language, while remaining faithful to their symbolic depth. Today, representations of the Barong are among the most sought-after subjects in his repertoire.
