CAUDURO Rafael (1950-2022) - Lot 95
CAUDURO Rafael (1950-2022) Bailarina, 1986. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated (19)86 lower right. (stretcher to be cleaned, traces of soil) 171 x 130.5 cm Provenance: Galeria de Arte Misrachi, Mexico. Note: Considered one of the major figures of contemporary Mexican art, Rafael Cauduro has been developing an immediately recognizable pictorial language since the 1980s, based on illusion, the transformation of space and a constant reflection on the human condition. Trained in architecture and industrial design before devoting himself entirely to painting, he constructs images of remarkable visual complexity in which reality and fiction seem continually to merge. Dated 1986, Bailarina belongs to a particularly sought-after period in his career, marked by his first major international exhibitions and his collaboration with Mexico City's Galería Misrachi, a major player in the dissemination of his work. The female figure occupies an essential place in her universe, as do the themes of time, memory and metamorphosis that run through the whole of her production. By virtue of its monumental format, provenance and date of execution, this work bears witness to the emergence of an artist who would go on to establish himself as one of the most influential painters and muralists in Mexico at the end of the 20th century.
