PAPART Max (1911-1994) Palette in the studio. Oil on cardboard. Signed lower right. Bears a label on the back "Galerie de la Gazette des Beaux-Arts / Exposition du prix Hallmark 1949". (accidents, missing parts and cracks). 73 x 60 cm (frame: 94 x 81 cm) Note: An important figure in the Marseilles School and later in the Provençal art scene, Max Papart developed a body of work after the Second World War that won him rapid recognition at national exhibitions and salons. The presence of the label from the 1949 Hallmark Prize exhibition places this composition among the artist's early works, predating the collages and geometric constructions that would ensure his international renown. The theme of the studio, rarely anodyne in art history, is here a direct evocation of the painter's world and his creative process.
