Note: Considered one of the major figures of contemporary African art, Chéri Samba established himself in the 1980s as one of the most influential artists of his generation. Today, his work is held in the collections of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, MoMA in New York, the Tate Modern in London and numerous international institutions. Through an immediately recognizable pictorial language combining image, text and social commentary, he is helping to bring the contemporary African art scene into the world's major museums.
Produced in 2003, Mami Wata is part of the series Le début de Chéri Samba, in which the artist revisits his own career and the cultural references that have nourished his imagination. An emblematic figure in Central and West African traditions, Mami Wata embodies seduction, power, prosperity and transformation. By associating this founding myth with an autobiographical reflection, this work fully illustrates Chéri Samba's ability to bring together personal memory, popular culture and contemporary questioning. Today, paintings from this period are among the artist's most sought-after works on the international market.
