Note: Bullfighting is one of the founding themes of Pablo Picasso's work. Born in Malaga, the artist remained deeply attached throughout his life to this universe, which he considered one of the major expressions of Spanish culture. Corridas, bulls, horses and picadors were recurrent themes in his work, from the early years of the 20th century to the late series of the 1960s.
Produced in 1952, this model belongs to a particularly rich period during which Picasso transposed his favorite subjects onto the ceramic medium. The picador, the emblematic figure of the bullring, joined an iconographic repertoire that culminated in the famous engravings of La Tauromaquia and the many variations on the bull, the central symbol of his artistic imagination. Referenced in Alain Ramié's catalog raisonné under no. 160, this plate fully illustrates the essential place of bullfighting in the artist's work.
