Note: A graduate of the Milan Polytechnic and a major figure in Italian design, Gae Aulenti (1927-2012) has been involved in the renewal of architecture and the decorative arts in Italy since the 1950s. Winner of several awards at the Milan Triennale, she is also known for her work on the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Palazzo Grassi in Venice. Created in 1965 for Martinelli Luce, the Pipistrello lamp has become one of the icons of 20th-century Italian design. Its diffuser, inspired by the outstretched wings of a bat, and its ingenious telescopic shaft make it an instantly recognizable model, today preserved in the collections of the world's leading design museums.
