Note: An ancient region located between present-day Afghanistan and Pakistan, Gandhara was one of the major artistic centers of early Buddhism. Between the 1st and 5th centuries CE, this region saw the emergence of an original art form blending Hellenistic heritage, Roman influences, and Buddhist iconography. Architectural reliefs in gray schist played a central role in this artistic production and adorned monasteries and shrines. This depiction of Bodhisattvas attests to the spread of Buddhism along the trade routes connecting India, Central Asia, and the Mediterranean world.
