[ASIA] AFGHANISTAN, Former Gandhara region, 4th/5th century - Lot 2
[ASIA] AFGHANISTAN, Former Gandhara region, 4th/5th century
Head in gray schist, depicting a Bodhisattva, the deity portrayed with a serene expression, eyes half-closed, hair styled in wavy locks gathered into a bun forming the ushnisha.
On its display base.
Height: 22 cm (with base: 32.5 cm)
Note: Gandhara art is considered the first major anthropomorphic representation of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas in the history of Buddhist art. A product of the Hellenistic traditions introduced to Asia following the conquests of Alexander the Great, it is distinguished by the naturalistic rendering of the faces, the wavy hair, and the serenity of the expressions. The half-closed eyes and the ushnisha atop the head are characteristic attributes of enlightened beings in Buddhist iconography. This head fully illustrates the encounter between Mediterranean artistic traditions and the spirituality of ancient India.
