[ASIA] CHINA, 19th–20th century - Lot 5
[ASIA] CHINA, 19th–20th century Square-sectioned porcelain vase in the so-called "cong" shape, mounted on a short foot; the quadrangular body features a relief decoration of "bagua" trigrams, the entire piece covered with a monochrome green glaze. Converted into a lamp. Height: 30 cm Note: Inspired by the ancient jade cong vessels of the Liangzhu culture (3rd millennium BCE), this quadrangular form holds a special place in Chinese decorative arts. Its bagua trigram decoration, derived from Taoist cosmology and the I Ching (Book of Changes), refers to the principles of harmony and balance that underpin traditional Chinese thought. Frequently reproduced on porcelain from the Qing Dynasty and later, this archaic repertoire reflects Chinese artisans’ attachment to ancient models and auspicious symbols.
