[ASIA] CHINA, Ming Dynasty, 17th century - Lot 8
[ASIA] CHINA, Ming Dynasty, 17th century
Large baluster-shaped bronze vase mounted on a square base, with a wide body decorated with relief in an archaic style.
(signs of wear)
Height: 40 cm
Note: Beginning with the Ming Dynasty, Chinese bronze casters drew heavily on the ritual vases of the Shang and Zhou dynasties (16th–3rd centuries BCE) for inspiration, whose forms and decorations were then regarded as the expression of a golden age of Chinese civilization. These so-called archaic-style creations were highly popular among scholars and collectors, who appreciated their scholarly dimension and their reference to antiquity. With its relief decoration and monumental silhouette, this vase fully embodies this taste for the rediscovery of ancient models that characterized bronze art during the Ming dynasty.
