[ASIA] CHINA, 19th century - Lot 19
[ASIA] CHINA, 19th century Bronze vase with a brown patina, mounted on a circular foot; the wide, ovoid body features a relief decoration of garlands with rings, surmounted by a long cylindrical neck flaring at the opening, flanked by two handles adorned with chimera heads. An archaic mark inside the neck. (damage and restorations) Height: 43.2 cm Note: Highly prized by Chinese scholars of the 18th and 19th centuries, archaic-style bronzes draw freely on the ritual vessels of the Shang and Zhou dynasties while adapting them to the tastes of their own era. The handles adorned with chimera heads and the suspended rings belong to a decorative repertoire inherited from ancient China, associated with protection and prestige. Intended for collectors’ cabinets and refined interiors, these bronzes reflect a lasting taste for scholarly forms and references to the classical age of Chinese civilization.
