[ASIA] JAPAN, Meiji Period - Lot 32
[ASIA] JAPAN, Meiji Period Bronze incense burner, with a cylindrical body decorated with relief motifs of insects and clouds, resting on a tripod base openworked with swastika friezes and adorned with vine branches winding around the legs; the two handles feature the same decoration. Marked on the base. 30 x 32 x 24.5 cm (Signs of wear and oxidation) Note: The Meiji period (1868–1912) corresponds to the golden age of Japanese decorative arts intended for export. Bronze workshops of the time produced works of great technical virtuosity, which were widely showcased at the World’s Fairs in Paris, Vienna, and Chicago. Naturalistic motifs featuring insects, plants, and clouds were among the most popular themes of this production, which contributed to the international renown of Japanese art in the late 19th century.
