[ASIA] TIBET, 18th century - Lot 39
[ASIA] TIBET, 18th century Tempera thangka on canvas, the composition centered on a Buddhist master depicted seated on a richly ornamented throne within a paradisiacal garden. Dressed in a monk’s robe, he holds a manuscript in his right hand and a bowl in his left; his expressive face is framed by a circular halo. At his feet sit two disciples engaged in meditation or study, accompanied by young acolytes. The upper register features several Buddhas seated in the clouds, while the background depicts an idealized landscape composed of pavilions, flowering trees, rockeries, and water features. Framed under glass. (Wear, creases, abrasions, cracks, and alterations to the paint layer visible across the entire surface) 40.5 x 62.5 cm Note: Thangkas dedicated to the great masters of Tibetan Buddhism play an essential role in the transmission of spiritual lineages. Depicted surrounded by disciples, Buddhas, and a paradisiacal landscape, this master embodies doctrinal authority and the continuity of the teaching. The manuscripts, monastic pavilions, and meditative figures that make up the scene reflect the importance placed on the study and transmission of the Dharma in 18th-century Tibet. Lineage paintings are among the most sought-after works of Tibetan religious art.
