[ASIA] TIBET, 18th century
Tempera thangka on canvas. The composition centers on Tsongkhapa, depicted seated in the lotus position (padmasana) on a richly decorated lotus throne, his hands performing the gesture of teaching. He is dressed in the monastic robes characteristic of the Gelugpa school and wears the traditional yellow hat. Surrounding the central figure is a large group of lineage masters, Buddhas, and bodhisattvas depicted within cloud-like mandorlas. The upper section features several meditating figures seated on lotuses within a celestial landscape. The lower section is animated by various wrathful deities and Dharma protectors surrounded by flames.

Note: Tsongkhapa (1357–1419), founder of the Gelugpa school, is among the most important reformers of Tibetan Buddhism. Recognizable by his characteristic yellow hat, he is depicted here surrounded by lineage masters, Buddhas, and Dharma protectors, illustrating the doctrinal richness of this tradition. Depictions of Tsongkhapa occupy a central place in the iconography of the Gelugpa school, from which the Dalai Lamas originate. This type of thangka constitutes a major testament to Tibetan religious art and the transmission of monastic teachings.
