CLEVELEY Robert (1747–1809), attributed to - Lot 63
CLEVELEY Robert (1747–1809), attributed to Shipping of Malta. Oil on canvas. Bears a label from the Mortimer Brandt Gallery in New York on the back. (minor damage to the frame) 89 x 147 cm (frame: 106 x 164 cm) Note: Robert Cleveley (1747–1809), official painter to the British Navy and a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy in London, this painting is part of the great tradition of English naval painting of the late 18th century. Cleveley’s works are now a major iconographic source for the study of British fleets and major maritime events of the Georgian era. The subject of Malta is of particular interest in the context of the naval rivalries then pitting European powers against one another in the Mediterranean, at a time when the island occupied a crucial strategic position. Formerly part of the collection of the Mortimer Brandt Gallery in New York, a leading gallery specializing in old master paintings and European decorative arts, this work benefits from a provenance that enhances its historical and collector’s appeal.
