Note: Julius Caesar Ibbetson (1759–1817) was one of the leading figures in English landscape painting at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Trained in Leeds before settling in London, he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy beginning in 1788 and specialized in rural landscapes animated by figures, herds, and scenes of daily life. Admired for his keen observation of nature and atmospheric effects, he contributed to the renewal of the British landscape before the emergence of Constable and Turner. The works of his circle attest to the lasting influence he exerted on the English school of landscape painting.
