Note: Giuseppe Canella (1788–1847) belonged to a family of Venetian painters active in the 19th century, known for their cityscapes, genre scenes, and compositions inspired by the great European masters. Trained in the artistic milieu of Lombardy and Veneto, he developed a precise and meticulous painting style particularly suited to small formats. Works executed on copper or metal, prized for the finesse of their execution and the brilliance of their colors, hold a special place in early 19th-century Italian art. This type of composition reflects the spread of Spanish models and collectors’ enduring interest in historical subjects.
