DALOU, Aimé-Jules (1838–1902) - Lot 112
DALOU, Aimé-Jules (1838–1902) The Kiss. Bronze cast with a nuanced brown patina. Produced by Hébrard starting in 1902. Signed "Dalou" on the rock and bearing the Hébrard lost-wax foundry stamp (produced starting in 1902). Bears the number (c10) on the terrace. Height: 41 cm Note: Aimé-Jules Dalou (1838–1902) ranks among the greatest French sculptors of the Third Republic. A student of François Duret at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he began exhibiting as early as the 1860s before achieving international renown, a reputation further solidified by his exile in London following the Paris Commune. Upon his return to France, he received major public commissions and created several landmark monuments, including the Triumph of the Republic on Place de la Nation in Paris and the monument to Delacroix in the Jardin du Luxembourg. Created toward the end of his career, *The Kiss* ranks among his most famous and personal works, illustrating his interest in naturalism, movement, and the expression of emotion. This cast is of particular interest due to its lost-wax casting by the Hébrard foundry, a leading foundry for French sculpture at the turn of the 20th century, also associated with the works of Degas, Barye, and Troubetzkoy. The Hébrard bronze casts of *Le Baiser* are today among the most sought-after casts of Dalou’s work and attest to the exceptional quality of French sculptural casting during the Belle Époque.
