Note: Émile Louis Picault, known as Pinedo (1840–1916), was one of the leading figures in Parisian decorative sculpture of the late 19th century. A student of Francisque Duret at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he exhibited regularly at the Salon beginning in 1863 and developed a repertoire blending allegorical figures, Orientalist subjects, and elegant female figures. His works are now held, notably, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington. Female figures at their dressing tables, such as this Woman at the Mirror, are among the most sought-after pieces in his oeuvre, reflecting the Belle Époque’s taste for intimate and refined subjects.
