DAUM Nancy - Lot 138
DAUM Nancy
A so-called "speaking" goblet made of multilayer glass, featuring an acid-etched design of thistles on a frosted background and bearing the motto "Am I a master, and will I always be one?".
Gilded signature with the Cross of Lorraine on the underside.
(very slight loss of gilding)
Height: 11.5 cm
Note: The thistle holds a special place in the decorative repertoire of the École de Nancy, becoming one of its most recognizable emblems. Prized for its natural lines and slender forms, it embodies the Art Nouveau artists’ desire to draw inspiration from local flora. The motto “Am I a master, and will I always be one?” ,” frequently associated with guilds and artisanal traditions, reinforces the symbolic dimension of this composition. Decorated thistle-patterned “speaking glasses” are among the most characteristic examples of Lorraine glass art from around 1900.
