Note: Trained under Thomas Couture and later Auguste Dumont at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Jules Desbois (1851–1935) began his career as a craftsman before joining Auguste Rodin’s studio in the 1880s, participating in several of Rodin’s major decorative projects. A friend of Alexandre Charpentier, Jean Carriès, and the leading artists of the French decorative revival, he exhibited regularly at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. His work, rediscovered in the 20th century thanks to the Jules-Desbois Museum in Parçay-les-Pins, is distinguished by the sensuality of his female figures, his mythological subjects, and his highly personal approach to sculpted relief. His depictions of naiads and nymphs, inspired by antiquity but rendered with a sensibility akin to Symbolism and Art Nouveau, rank among the most characteristic themes of his work.
