Diam.: 16.5 cm Note: Considered the greatest French medalist of the 19th century, David d'Angers (1788–1856) created more than five hundred sculpted portraits of the prominent figures of his time. A student of Jacques-Louis David and winner of the Prix de Rome in 1811, he devoted much of his career to creating a veritable “gallery of the 19th century,” bringing together artists, writers, scholars, military figures, and politicians. His medallions of Béranger, Kléber, Fabvier, and Buonarroti bear witness to this unique documentary ambition, now largely preserved at the Galerie David d'Angers, housed in the former Toussaint Abbey in Angers. These portraits are among the most valuable examples of French Romantic sculpture.
