BAILLY Charles-Eloy (1830–1895) - Lot 205
BAILLY Charles-Eloy (1830–1895) Carmen. Small chryselephantine statuette in gilded bronze resting on a circular hardstone base. Height: 21.5 cm (with base) Note: A student of François Jouffroy at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Charles-Eloy Bailly (1830–1895) exhibited regularly at the Salon beginning in 1853 and received several official awards during the Second Empire and the Third Republic. A sculptor appreciated for his allegorical figures and genre subjects, he also created several public commissions and monumental works. Sculptures by his hand are now preserved notably at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Angers, the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse, as well as in various French public collections. The depictions inspired by Carmen, which gained popularity following the success of Bizet’s opera premiered in 1875, illustrate the fascination of late 19th-century sculptors with heroines of literature and theater.
